White distilled vinegar is the essential cleaning ingrediant for green homes. I found that vinegar also works to clean stove-tops and catch-pans under burners. Put full strength vinegar on the surface to soak, then add baking powder for a little effervescent abrasive power!

Vinegar is made from over-fermenting alcohol. White vinegar is made out of corn alcohol, Apple cider vinegar is made from cider or the apple must and Balsamic vinegar is made from the concentrated juice or must of white grapes.
As the sugar ferments it is converted to alcohol, but when alcohol is fermented further with air, the alcohol is catalytically oxidized and becomes the carboxylic acid acetic acid (the chemical name for vinegar).
Vinegar contains acetic acid which is good for disinfection and deodorizing.
There are 1001 Uses for White Vinegar, here are a few:
- Deodorizing and cleaning: combine ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup hot water.
- Clean grout by letting full-strength white distilled vinegar sit on it for a few minutes and scrubbing it with an old toothbrush.
- To clean a grease splattered oven door window, saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge.
- Remove mineral deposits from coffee makers with white distilled vinegar. Fill the water reservoir with 1 cup or more of white distilled vinegar and run it through a whole cycle. Run it once or twice more with plain water to rinse clean. (Check the owners’ manual first.)
- Get rid of fruit flies by setting out a small dish of undiluted white distilled vinegar.
There are many other uses for vinegar
Around the garden ~ Stop ants from congregating by pouring white distilled vinegar on the area.
In the laundry~ Attack spaghetti, barbecue, or ketchup stains with a white distilled vinegar and water solution.
Health related uses ~ Stop insect stings and bites from itching by dabbing them with a cotton ball saturated with undiluted white distilled vinegar.
Pets ~ Remove skunk odors by wiping down the animal with a 50-50 solution of white distilled vinegar and water, followed by a plain-water rinse. Repeat if necessary.
Cooking ~ When poaching eggs, add a little white distilled vinegar to the water. The whites stay better formed.
